Undertoad --This is the best scientific answer and I believe that the law should have a scientific basis with a cultural bias rather than the other way around.
--------
The same scientists who claim millions of years, evolution, gill slits, black moths, and have the circular argument about fossils dating rocks and rocks dating fossils?? No thanks.
Morally, once you're pregnant, you're pregnant. That is a BABY. No question.
Legally, I can not and SHOULD not foist MY morals upon another person. We're dealing with two separate issues here, and most Christians can't get past that. I can voice MY opinion, but that should not be a law. When we start taking freedoms away, we take away CHOICE. And that is wrong.
That being said, legally there must be a limit as to what is "alive" and what is a "parasite" (I really dislike the way that word is used to describe life, but there it is.). And hence, the argument insues. Science can't PROVE when a baby has conciousness any more than they can tell you what day a baby will say it's first word or take it's first steps. They can give an average range (say, between 5 and 6 months in womb).
But there is a bigger picture here. One of the questions presented in this thread can be rephrased to ask: "Up to what point can we kill the baby/parasite/fetus/tissue before it feels pain and recognizes it is dying?"
Think about that.
No. Really think about it.
Point for discussion:What if "science" finds out that it is conscious at say, 2 months? Then should abortion be illegal after 2 months? What if "science" advances such that it's conscious and aware at 2 weeks? Should abortion be legal up until 2 weeks? Most women don't even find out they are pregnant until 4 to 6 weeks in. Oops! Too late, law says you can't have an abortion after 2 weeks.
Why are we as a society letting "science" tell us what is and is not wrong? Because that's what the debate is about. It's about "Is it right or wrong to kill a baby while it is a "parasite", wholly dependant on the mother, while in the womb?"
Laws are passed BY a society to REFLECT what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior within that society. Times past, in the United States, it was acceptable to drink alcohol. Then it became unacceptable, and a law was passed. Well, turns out that drinking alcohol wasn't so unacceptable to alot of people, so that law was overturned. Times past, in the US, in order to get a divorce, there had to be ADULTERY in the marriage to get a divorce.
Where did that idea come from?
FAULT had to be proven to get a divorce. Then a revolutionary new thing came out: No-Fault divorce. Only certain states had it. People would FLOCK to those states once the opportunity was given and so other states passed those laws. Look at the divorce rate now.
Before Roe v. Wade, it was NOT legal to have an abortion. Society said, "That is unacceptable." That's why back alley abortions happened, just like back alley drug deals happen. Back in the day, it was WRONG to have sex before marriage. Remember when they used to send young women away when they got pregnant? Why? Because it was SHAMEFUL to be pregnant and unwed because YOU HAD SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE.
Where did that idea come from?
Then all the sudden, it was ok to kill the baby. (We didn't start using words like "parasite" and "tissue" back then. Doctors didn't say, "You're going to have a parasite." They still don't. They don't say, "You're with fetus." They said "You're with CHILD."
Look at us, as a society, now. Are we better off as a society now than we were 50 years ago? Do we have more crime or less? More abortions or less? More rape or less? More theft or less? More murder or less? More bombs or less? When did it all change??
When we stopped being responsible for our actions. When we stopped caring about the consequences. When we got away from the foundation that this country was built upon.
When we tried to replace God with monkeys. When evolution was taught in school. When children were taught they were nothing more than high-functioning animals. When they heard "science" tell them that the bible is wrong about creation, so it's possible it's wrong about everything else, too.
So if Jesus didn't really die on the cross to remove sin, then he was just a guy that died. And he wasn't the son of God. And maybe there is no God. So since there isn't a God, there's no one that created us, so there is no creation. There is no absolute moral code, so I decide right and wrong.
Columbine. 9/11. Oklahoma City. Manson. Drugs. Theft. Rape. Abortion. Daumer.
And people call *me* crazy?
